Lyrics |
She's a waitress at a restaurant
I see her now and then
We talk as she clears the tables
She's nothing more than a friend
But something's changed in recent times
It's something I can't define
The way she talks is somehow more intense
She's no longer sitting on her side of the fence
I was sitting drinking coffee last Tuesday
And quietly reading the news
When she made a point of showing me
That she'd bought herself a new pair of shoes
Now I didn't think much about it
But she came back again and again
And each time that she saw me
Well, that look in her eye was the same
Now don't go getting any silly ideas
'Cos I've got someone at home
And I ain't gonna fall for your temptations
My heart, it ain't gonna roam
Yeah, I like you, fine
But I can't pay no mind
To your soft seductive ways
It's just too high a price to pay
If it was a different situation
And I had no other ties
Then nothing would have stopped me
From falling for those eyes
But I ain't the kind
For cheating and lies
And I ain't the kind
To fool around on the side
So don't go getting any silly ideas
'Cos I've got someone at home
And I ain't gonna fall for your temptations
My heart, it ain't gonna roam
Yeah, I like you, fine
But I can't pay no mind
To your soft seductive ways
It's just too high a price to pay

A Bit of Trivia |
One Friday night, a couple of friends and I, the main protagonist being someone who shall remain nameless for fear of causing conflict in his relationship with his wife, were out on the town in Brisbane. The protagonist had been given a "weekend pass" by his recently acquired wife while she had flown to Cairns for a weekend workshop or something. Anyway, we were sitting in the Britannia Inn in Brisbane and "the nameless one" had drunk enough to get a little merry, and was happily chatting up one of the waitresses, conveniently forgetting that he was no longer single.
As the night progressed, it seemed that the flirting was getting a little too serious, so the other friend and I took it upon ourselves to extract "the nameless one" from the situation, thus saving him from himself.
On returning home, a rough outline of the lyrics were written, fleshed out later.
However, the story behind the words was misinterpreted by DK's partner at the time, who could not be convinced that the tale was not autobiographical, and so became hugely jealous, causing several days of silence to follow!
