Lyrics |
Today I tried to walk away from all the words
That I regret
Though I've been walking half the day
I haven't been able to lose them yet
I've got the echoes of a distant conversation
Ringing in my head
And no matter what I try there's a voice
Keeps talking when I'm in my bed
Well, people try to tell me there's a new day dawning
But I'm not so sure
Is there a light at the end of this long dark tunnel?
Or something more
It seems your history will always follow you
The past is there and there's nothing you can do
Just get on with life as it comes to you
What's done is done and there's nothing
There's nothing you can do
Softly, softly make your way
Past the gates of Judgment Day
Take your mind to some solid ground
Be careful not to make a sound
Eat your fill of the sanctuary there
Lose your soul without a care
Is it God or the Devil that saves your soul?
Well I don't know
I guess there's only one way to know for sure
And I ain't ready to go
How can the smell of success at the end of the night
Be such a bitter pill
When a stranger’s touch gives you nothing more
Than a sudden chill
It seems your history will always follow you
The past is there and there's nothing you can do
Just get on with life as it comes to you
What's done is done and there's nothing
There's nothing you can do
Nothing is mightier than the pen
And truth will always win in the end
So guard your heart in a safer haven
I'll meet you when we get to heaven…

A Bit of Trivia |
The song describes the realization that no matter what you would wish, there's certain facts in your past that cannot be ignored. There is no point in regretting them, because they happened, and, for all intents and purposes, have created what you have become, for better or worse.
This recording was done as part of a University project. A Uni friend, Paul Smith, was roped in to supply some guitar parts, but, on arriving at the studio, having not practised anything, found it difficult to come to grips with the material and so gave up in frustration.
Again, this song will no doubt be re-recorded at some point in time.
