Lyrics |
The sun came up on the plains of Colorado
The driver told us that our next stop would be Pueblo
My God, it's McDonalds for breakfast yet again
No wonder all these night trips always feel the same
It was the 6.30 bus from Dallas through to Denver
Argued religion with a missionary from Wichita
Albuquerque at 2 AM is a night to remember
I'm still two weeks from home, just dying to get back there
Well Fred was only there to avoid doing service
Though Holland was his home, going back made him nervous
He got a study grant at the Uni up in Boulder
Do enough to make the grade give the Army the cold shoulder
Got a bus to catch to Salt Lake in the morning
I've got a wake up call, 'cos it's an 8.30 boarding
There's snow on the Rockies and it sure looks a picture
I'm still two weeks from home, just dying to get back there
I flew from London to Miami, been to Houston, New Orleans
And the sunset over Utah was a sight to be seen
Read the story of the Mormons on the walls of Temple Square
Walked the streets of San Francisco, saw some fine people there
I stopped at Santa Barbara beach 'cos it sure looked nice
But if I don't make LAX, I might pay the price
Read the news in the paper and it's given me a scare
I'm still two weeks from home, just dying to get back there

A Bit of Trivia |
The lyrics to this song were originally written in 1989, not long after DK returned to Australia from his 6-month sojourn in the UK.
On the way home, he traveled across the USA by bus, using a 10-day Greyhound bus pass that actually turned into 12 days.
This is the story of that trip, although there's a slight factual error in the song in that he never actually went to Albuquerque, as his memory was playing tricks on him at the time. He actually went to Amarillo, but, after realizing the mistake, found that the correct name wouldn't fit with the phrasing of the verse, so, using a little creative license, left it as Albuquerque.
